The adventures of the Wilson sisters in the American West.
From the author of the bestselling books For the Love of Horses and Stallion Challenges comes a brand new adventure, this time in the cowboy country of the American West.
Having saved New Zealand's wild Kaimanawa horses, the Wilson sisters - Kelly, Vicki and Amanda - turn to the plight of America's wild Mustangs. Can they tame their Mustangs in time for the Extreme Mustang Makeover?
Join Kelly, Vicki and Amanda as they ride through the American wilderness on their most exciting and eventful journey yet.
ABOUT AMERICAN MUSTANGS:
Once, an estimated two to seven million wild horses had roamed the West, but now only about 30,000 to 45,000 can be found on public lands. Each year, excess wild Mustangs and Burros are mustered and — because of an anti-slaughter policy and a lack of people interested in re-homing them — are stockpiled in government holding facilities run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Since 1971, when the United States Congress first recognised Mustangs as ‘living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West’, over 270,000 wild horses have been removed from the range despite the outrage of activists. Today, 35 years on, 50,000 wild horses are currently languishing in holding facilities across America, costing taxpayers US$80 million a year to feed and manage. Only a fraction of these are adopted.
In 2007, in a bid to raise public awareness and increase re-homing rates, the Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) launched the Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM), a national training incentive very similar to our own Kaimanawa Stallion Challenges. Since then, over 5000 horses have been saved through this programme — but each year thousands more are captured, and supply continues to outnumber demand. The majority of these captive Mustangs will end their lives in the holding facilities — a far from ideal existence for these once-wild horses. Nothing seems about to change: the musters keep happening, wild Mustangs end up being held captive and good horses are wasting away in prison-like environments.
Mustang Ride was a very inspiring book that sent out a very important message that you really can do anything with horses if you put your mind to it. I rate it 5 stars and would definitely recommend it to anybody - horsey and not horsey. The books are such good quality and great photos! Definitely something to pass down the family. – Morgan
Mustang Ride was amazing. Very inspiring, and I love all the adventures you went on and how you shared all of your experiences and what the horses taught you throughout the book❤️ - Rose
Kelly, your books are filled with great all-round knowledge about the wild horse 'fight or flight' instinct. They are so inspirational to young children and send awareness out for the beautiful animal with no voice. They have beautiful pictures and a lot of people can relate to them, which makes them so well read. The photos relating to the text also makes your books extra special as you can see first hand the horses transition from wild ponies to kids ponies in a matter of weeks, only taking a little bit more time and patience to get them to the ridden stage (in your case only in a matter of weeks, which is incredible!) your books are so knowledgeable and so inspiring Kelly, please continue to share your knowledge. ❤️ - Anonymous

Mustang ride was an awesome book to read, however would have loved it to be longer as I read it way too quickly! I really enjoyed the amount of photographs in the book too, it really enables the reader to get an accurate picture of exactly what you’re talking about. - Holly
For the Love of Horses and Mustang Ride are truly two of my all time favourite books. I am a true reader and a horse lover through and through and have been following your journey forever! These books don’t sugar coat anything, in any way, and I just love how real and down to earth they are. They show your passions through the pages you have written and it makes me - and I'm sure many others - aspire to do many wonderful things like you sure have done! - Tyla Bishop
